Iterative Deployment was an experimental design process developed during my MA project at the Edinburgh College of Art. The approach built on literature concerning ambiguous prototypes and user toolkits, exploring how open-ended artefacts might prompt participants to reinterpret and reshape a design’s purpose. The process began by distributing a device with no predefined function to members of the public. Participants were encouraged to imagine possible uses, after which their responses were interpreted and translated into working prototypes. These prototypes were returned for further testing, refinement, or redirection, creating a cyclical process of interpretation and redevelopment. The method generated a broad range of speculative concepts, one of which developed into the artefact later titled photoBot. Iterative Deployment foregrounded ambiguity, co-interpretation, and staged prototyping as a means of expanding the design space.
